Our cables kept falling behind the tables, and our office supply had only large applications for cable holders, not suitable at all to our need. Dr. Grossman solved the problem with strips of hook & loop fasteners, and then went immediately to an improved version that was easier to handle. Emory & Henry enjoyed hosting the Southwest Virginia Science Teachers Academy for the past two weeks! Photos from the second week (Group 2) are now posted, and members are welcome to comment or to download photos.

This program will continue with activities through the school year and next summer.

The Education Division and the Neff Center wish everyone Merry Christmas! Classes are over, and exams are under way. The student teachers have completed their school placements, and the semester is coming to a close.

Congratulations to our graduates this semester! Be sure to stay in touch with the Neff Center and with the Powell Resource Center for support during your job searches. Also, the Alumni Office and the Neff Center hope to hear from you frequently, so always let us know where you are teaching and what you are doing! If you remain in the region, plan to attend the B. G. Raines Education Forum each spring! The Forum this year is on March 27th, at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center at Exit 14.

I have a wonderful friend who cares for all animals, and she has this beautiful black kitten with huge tufted ears and bright gold eyes that needs a home. She gave the kitten a bath and said that she just sat and purred, which is very unusual. The kitten is gentle and playful. Thank you for the lovely flowers!

Not only do I get to work with the Forum, which is great, but I have a wonderful team of faculty and students to work with me, and then afterward they send me flowers!

How good does it get?

Dr. Diss made some photos of the 2006 Forum, and I will post some of those on Monday or Tuesday.

It was great to see Dr. Bob Raines and hear him "say a few words" at the Forum, which from now on will be The B. G. Raines Education Forum in his honor. For those of you who may still have comments to contribute, stories about Dr. Raines and messages to him can be posted using the link on the Forum web page.

Also, thank you to Mary Abouzeid, our keynote speaker, and to Michele Dahlquist and Diana Duckworth, our teacher roundtable presenters, for ideas and inspiration! Michele was in touch today regarding a hand-out that ran short, and she is sending me copies for those of you who did not get them.

And once again, thanks to food services at Emory & Henry for all the food that tasted as good as it looked, to the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center for the use of their conference center, and to our Virginia Region 7 school districts for their financial support and attendance at the Forum.

Professors Bob and Juanita Raines, whom many of you will remember, are retired from Emory & Henry. Dr. Bob Raines will be honored at this year's Annual Education Forum at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center at Exit 14 in Abingdon for his many contributions to education in southwest Virginia and for his role in creating the Annual Education Forum eignteen years ago.

Be sure to register for the Forum so that you will be counted in attendance and to help us plan for seating and refreshments! The Forum is April 11th, with events beginning at 3:00 in the afternoon and the main event (Lyceum event) at 6:00 p.m.

Education Forum coming up in April

The Forum on April 11 will be important for a couple of reasons:

We have Mary Abouzeid as our keynote speaker. She will be talking about Reading First in Virginia, a topic that will be of interest to all Virginia educators, especially to teachers in elementary grades.

We will be honoring Dr. Bob Raines who recently retired from the Emory & Henry faculty in teacher education. Dr. Raines is the person who essentially created the Forum, and he has been an important figure in education in southwest Virginia for forty years.

There is a link on the Forum webpage for you to share your messages, anecdotes, stories, photos, and notes about Dr. Raines. When you use this link, you will be sending your information to Sarah Williams, who will post these to the web page.

As usual, the SVEA will be hosting the event, so you will be receiving information on that at your next meeting.

Global Comparative Education

The Global Studies course entitled Global Comparative Education will analyze the historical, political, cultural, and economic background and current issues concerning modern education in developing and developed countries. The relation between education and economic development will be explored. We will be looking at the educational systems in Brazil, China, India, Germany, Great Britain, Mexico, and the United States.

new ethical inquiry course

The new ethical inquiry class offered by the education department: “mediated consumption and personal identity” will shift how you view yourself. We will throw you a buoy so you can float above the stream of mass media long enough to consider it’s affects on who you are becoming. More importantly, we will ask you to evaluate the role you are apt to play in the lives of others as we all flow in the greatest torrent of information ever dispensed by humankind. It is late July and the peaches are ready for the freezer, which means it is about time for me to be back in the office instead of home watching the garden grow!

I know that you will be happy to meet our new professor in the Education Department, Dr. Eric Grossman. Dr. Grossman is already on campus. He will be teaching EDUC 401 Practicum and will be co-instructor with Dr. Stainback in Secondary Student Teaching, Seminar, and Curriculum and Instruction.

Remember that if you are a Junior this year you need to register for your Junior Interview. You can find information and download registration forms from the Neff Center webpage. Watch for the Junior Interview information on your college e-mail, or just check out the website and be ahead of the game! Junior Interviews this semester will be September 19-22, with a registration deadline of Wednesday, September 14.

A special welcome to new students in the department, new SVEA officers, and Student Teachers for this semester.

We are planning the Education Forum this year for Tuesday, April 11th, and you will be hearing more about that as we begin Spring semester. SVEA has been very helpful in the past with the Forum, and last year was really great with SVEA members taking care of the mailings and the on-site management of the event.

I look forward to working with you during 2005-2006!

Spring is here and the semester is ending! Congratulations to the SVEA for a great semester.

Your contribution to the Education Forum was most appreciated this semester. We had 502 persons documented in attendance, one of the biggest turnouts ever! In addition, the Higher Education Center had another event going on in our lobby space, which made for lots of unexpected confusion. Ali and the SVEA crew were more than equal to the task, however, and our evaluations on the Forum were uniformly complimentary.

Almost everyone has picked up the Senior gifts, and we are preparing for exit interviews on May 5th.

Have a great summer, and keep in touch!

Thank you to all of the Education Department faculty and students for the gifts, flowers, cards, and candy!

I was in the office yesterday to get the ball rolling for the Education Forum on April 5th. By April most of my treatment should be behind me and I will be back 100% and enjoying the Forum with you! Meanwhile, I will be in the office when I can, but I may miss a few days, especially at the beginning of the semester.

Those of you who are student teaching this semester be sure to keep in touch -- check your e-mail and your campus mail and do not miss important information. Graduation information will be coming to you from the Registrar and Career Services. You have a lot to keep track of during this semester with seminars, teaching and observation in your placements, and graduation coming up.

Semester is coming to an end!

There are only a few more days of the fall semester left! Next week we have Thanksgiving break, then we come back for a few days, then exams, and then it is over. Most of our student teachers will be graduating, finishing their exit interviews on the first day of exam week.

The Christmas tree is up in the Neff Education Center, and you are invited to bring an ornament for the tree. I will try to get a photograph of the tree posted here for you the Monday after Thanksgiving.

If you are a member of the Emory & Henry chapter of the Student Virginia Education Association (SVEA) and have not received an invitation to the blog, let me know by e-mail or come by the office. I see that some of you have logged in, but so far nobody is posting to the blog. You are invited to participate, to put up posts and comments. If you can't figure out how to get this to work, stop by the office and I will point you in the right direction!

Virginia Testing Requirements

I wanted to let you know that information on the Virginia testing requirements for certification is available on the Internet. This includes Praxis I and II, Virginia Reading Assessment, the rules for substitution of SAT or ACT scores for Praxis I, and the School Leaders Licensure Assessment for Administration and Supervision.

Hope everyone is ready for preregistration, which begins tomorrow. Remember that if you are preregistering for Student Teaching or for Education 401 Practicum you need to also turn in an application. The application form is available in the Neff Center, and it assists us with placing you in the schools for your teaching and observation.

I see a few of you have answered your blogger invitations! Remember that you can post as well as read the entries here, and you can post comments.

Preregistration for Spring

Preregistration for spring semester begins next Wednesday, a week from today. Please sign up on your advisor's appointment sheet for your preregistration advisment!

Putting your name on the appointment list a few days in advance helps your advisor plan and also helps the Neff Education Center staff make sure your folders and advisement materials are available when you arrive.

If you have not signed up yet, please stop by and do so as soon as possible!

Many invitations to the Blog have not been answered. If you are having problems, let me know! After you answer your invitation, you will be able to post comments and entries to this page.
